Want to be the person everyone remembers at a networking event? Here’s how to stand out in a sea of handshakes and business cards.
Let’s face it—networking events can feel like a blur. You meet dozens of people, exchange cards, and engage in small talk, but only a few truly stand out. The question is: How can YOU be one of them?
I’ve seen firsthand how event professionals can leave a lasting impact with the right strategies. Here’s how you can be memorable at networking events:
1. Start with a Power Introduction
Forget the usual “Hi, I’m [Name], and I do [Job].” Instead, craft a unique hook that sparks curiosity. Example:
❌ “I’m an event planner.”
– “I help brands create unforgettable experiences that turn guests into ambassadors.”
2. Focus on THEM, Not Just You
People remember how you make them feel. Instead of pitching yourself, ask insightful questions like:
✔️ “What’s the most exciting event you’ve worked on?”
✔️ “What’s a challenge you’re trying to solve right now?”
✔️ “How can I support your business?”
3. Use the Power of Storytelling
Data is forgettable; stories aren’t. Share a quick, engaging story that showcases your expertise.
– Instead of saying, “I organize corporate retreats,” say:
“Last year, we turned a boring annual conference into a ‘Survivor’-style leadership retreat—attendees still talk about it!”
4. Have a Signature Element
Be the person with something unique—a bold-colored jacket, a memorable catchphrase, or even an unusual business card. One of my mentors signs his name upside-down—people always remember him!
5. Follow Up with Impact
Networking doesn’t end at the event. Within 24 hours:
✔️ Send a LinkedIn request with a personalized message
✔️ Reference something you discussed
✔️ Offer value (an article, an introduction, or an idea)
Here’s an example of a great follow-up message:
* “Hi [Name], it was great connecting at [Event Name]! I loved our conversation about [Topic]. Here’s an article I came across that might interest you. Let’s stay in touch!”
* Remember: People don’t recall what you say; they remember how you make them feel. Be engaging, be helpful, and be YOU.
* Tag someone who always stands out at networking events! What’s their secret? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
